Balustrades that are safe and look good

A balustrade has two jobs: to stop people falling from a balcony, landing or staircase, and to finish the space off properly. Steel balustrades are strong, can be made in almost any design and are made to the exact measurements of your stairs or balcony.

Balustrades are fixed to the floor slab, the stair stringer or the wall with suitable brackets and anchors, then finished with primer and enamel or galvanised for outdoor balconies.

What affects the price of a balustrade

Balustrades are usually priced per running metre. The design, the steel sections, the number of posts, the stair shape and the finish all affect the price. Curved stairs and detailed scrollwork take more time to make.

Send the approximate length of the railing and a photo of the stairs or balcony, and a contractor can give you options and a quote.

Height and safety

Balustrades need to be high enough and the gaps between the bars small enough to keep children safe. The National Building Regulations (SANS 10400) set minimum heights and maximum gap sizes for balustrades on stairs, balconies and landings. The contractor will design the railing to suit where it is going and can advise on what applies to your project.

Questions about balustrades & railings

Do you make glass balustrades?

This site focuses on steel balustrades. Steel posts and handrails can be combined with glass panels on request. Ask when you send your enquiry.

Can you replace an old wooden balustrade?

Yes. Old balustrades can be removed and replaced with steel, often using the same fixing points.

Is wrought iron the same as mild steel?

Most "wrought-iron" work today is made from mild steel shaped to look like traditional wrought iron. It is strong and affordable.
