Fixed burglar bars are the most cost-effective way to secure windows. For doors, sliding doors and stacking doors you usually need something that opens, such as a hinged or sliding steel security gate fitted inside or outside the frame. Many homes use both: fixed bars on the windows and security gates on the doors, made to match.

Safety: think about escape routes

Bars keep intruders out, but you still need a way out in an emergency. Ask about an opening section with a lock or a security gate on at least one bedroom window or door, and keep the key nearby.
